A Documentary Short Film

Take Care looks at the child care crisis in North Carolina, how it affects everyone, and what's at stake if we don't fix it. Watch the documentary below or watch and share the trailer here.

Our nation relies on quality child care to support children’s healthy development and learning, allow parents to work, and keep businesses running. Yet, child care is in crisis—one that has been decades in the making and was exacerbated by the pandemic.

This crisis hurts everyone—children, families, child care teachers and providers, businesses, and our economy.

Take Care is intended to spark discussion and spur action to solve North Carolina's crisis. Through the voices and stories of North Carolina families, child care teachers, businesses, and community leaders, Take Care provides a firsthand account of how this crisis is impacting all of us, how communities are trying to address the crisis, and what is at stake if we don’t create lasting solutions.

“Childcare workers are leaving the workforce because they can't make it to support their own families, and the centers can't afford to pay them anymore. It's just a cycle… we're really facing a crisis.”

— Todd Goins, Director of Social Services, Clay County

“We have too much to lose. Way too much to lose both today with services and tomorrow with those young minds, those babies being born, not being developed properly. And we'll pay for that, or society will pay for it when they're an adult and not able to contribute. That's up to us.”

— David Farris, President & CEO, Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce

“I would have to call the other two centers and get on a waiting list, because two centers alone in a county can't take everyone's kids. This is a crisis. I mean, truly it's a crisis. It's huge.”
